Academicians moot breakfast for poor students
Tiruchirapalli, Feb 6 (UNI) A group of academicians here has mooted introduction of breakfast for students from weaker sections, on the lines of the ongoing noon-meal scheme, which has helped improve enrolment in schools and check drop-out rate.
S Sivakumar and his colleagues at the the District Institute of Education Technology, a pioneering institute in this area, had put forward 'Community Breakfast Scheme,' to help such students.
Teachers of the Thanjammal Memorial Elementary School of the Seva Sangam here, where the anniversary of the scheme's launch celebrated yesterday, said the scheme had brought significant improvement in the academic performance of students.
About 25 per cent of the poorest among the 458 students of the school are beneficiaries.
Participating in the anniversary meet, A Joseph Gerald, Corporation Councillor, yesterday said he would take necessary iniatives to introduce the scheme in corporation schools.
Ten other schools had followed the suit, extending help to about 500 students, educational department sources said.
