WD brings more rain and snow in HP; Woman dies due to glacier

Shimla, Feb 5 (UNI) A 22-year old girl was buried alive under a glacier even as an active Western Disturbance (WD) brought more snow and rain in Himachal Pradesh since last night, police and met sources said.

The girl, identified as Om Prabha, came under the glacier, about eight km from Sangla in Kinnaur district yesterday, District DSP Shamsher Singh said.

Her body was handed over to her relatives after post mortem examination. The district administration has announced an immediate cash relief of Rs 10,000 to her family.

With this, the death toll due to extreme weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh rose to eleven so far.

The Kinnaur administration has advised people from venturing out of their homes due to the threat of avalanches and glaciers following met office forecast that the district was expected to experience heavy snowfall in the next few days.

Besides, all senior district officials have also been asked to remain vigilant and undertake relief and rescue operations in times of any exigencies, Assistant Deputy Commissioner M L Mehta said.

Meanwhile, an active Western Disturbance (WD) continues to bring more rain and snow to the state with several high and mid hills experiencing fresh spell of intermittent snowfall, while moderate to heavy rains lashed the lower parts of the state.

Almost all mountain peaks, passes and valleys in the tribal districts of Kinnuar, Lahaul Spiti, Chamba and Kullu were experiencing another spell of snowfall, while rains were lashing the lower areas of these districts.
