Chandigarh, Feb 5 (UNI) After the success of AC Taxis in the City, Chandigarh Administration has decided to start user-friendly low- cost LPG driven Non-AC taxis.

UT Home Secretary Krishna Mohan said the decision has been taken to contain pollution being generated by the ever-increasing number of Auto Rikshaws in the City. This decision will provide a low fare, comfortable option to the citizens, in addition to the AC Taxis, he said.

Mr Mohan said that all the precautions to safeguard the interests of the passengers would be taken and non A.C. vehicles will be fitted with electronic meter.

The vehicles may be used for ferrying passengers from point to point in the local area of the city.

The operators would be able to keep a fleet of at least 10 non Air Conditioned cars. Only new vehicles will be allowed for the services, which would have to be further phased out after five years, Mr. Mohan said.

The Home Secretary also informed that the vehicles would be linked through a modern communication system with a control room maintained by the operators.

Applications for Non AC taxis would be called soon and the fare charged by the Non AC taxis would be at the rate of Rs 6 per km, he said.
