Kochi, Feb 2 (UNI) The Kochi Naval base today witnessed a keenly contested boat race in the Ernakulam Channel, with six teams, comprising personnel from different naval units here.
Races were held in six categories to enable competition amongst various ranks, with each team having a crew of six including a helmsman.
Pulling away on 27-feet boats called 'Whalers', the teams, in a test of human grit and endurance, displayed fighting spirit to win the prestigious 'COCK', a traditional name for the Boat Pulling Regatta Trophy. Lusty cheers greeted the teams each time a race was flagged off from the Venduruthy bridge till the finish line, a distance of about 1.7 km.
Vice Admiral Sunil K Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, was the Chief Guest of the event.
While INS Garuda 'A' team won the Regatta and bagged the 'COCK', INS Dronacharya team was declared the runner-up. The Vice Admiral also presented the prestigious 'Godavari' trophy to the INS Venduruthy team for emerging overall first in sports during 2007.
INS Dronacharya retained the 'Best Spirited' trophy for the sixth consecutive year.
The organisers 'Seamanship School' put up a display of various water sports activities practiced at the Watermanship Training Centre of the naval base.
