BJP faces crisis ahead of Tripura elections
Agartala, Feb 2 (UNI) The Tripura unit of the BJP has received a setback ahead of the Assembly elections, with the judgment of a local court against present president of the party Nilmani Deb, which asked him to relinquish the post immediately.
The court also directed the party not to engage Mr Deb in any political activities, stating that his appointment was not legal as per the party constitution, because his participation in the election itself was illegal.
A leader of the state BJP council, Mr Aparajita De, had filed a case challenging the election of the president on January 28 following a no confidence move by 11 councilors out of 32 on January five in the state council meeting against Mr Deb.
Mr Deb was elected in November, 2006, as president of the state council, which the court termed illegal, as the election procedure was not transparent and it was established that he had occupied the post without maintaining the party constitution.
The party leaders also criticised the national council of the BJP and alleged that despite submission of detailed report of the irregularity in the election of the president, the national leaders were inactive, which forced the party activists to seek judicial help.
