Vilash, Eetee, Nikhita, Gurinder bag AITA titles

Chandigarh, Feb 1 (UNI) Vilash Khate of National Tennis Academy, Gurinder Singh of Punjab, Likhita Shetty of Karnataka and Eetee Mehta of Gujarat won the boys under-14, boys under-16, girls under-14 and girls under-16 singles titles, respectively in the AITA Championship Tennis Series at the Lake Sports Complex here today.

Third seed Gurinder Singh richly deserved a straight sets 6-4, 6-4 verdict against top seed Navneet Kumar of Allahabad in the boys under-16 final. Navneet was unleashing his shots half -heartedly and checked his follow through. Gurinder also made a number of unforced errors but won comfortably.

Fourth seed Vilash Khate defeated another best CLTA bet third seed Digvijay Naruka in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the boys under-14 singles final.

Eette Mehta had mixed fourtunes in girls category. Sixth seed Eetee put up a tough resistance against top seed Likhita Shetty of Karnataka before going down in three sets in the under-14 final.

They fought for each point in the first two sets before splitting these for one-all. Likhita won the first set at 7-5.

Eetee hit back and restored parity by claiming the second set at 7-6 (3) in tie-breaker. Likhita then outclassed Eetee in the third and deciding set which she claimed at 6-1.

Eetee, however, had the consolation of picking up the girls under-16 singles crown. Seeded second Eetee Mehta defeated unseeded Ravnoor Kaur, a CLTA trainee 6-1, 6-2.

Adviser to the Chandigarh Administrator Pradeep Mehra distributed the prizes. Some of the winners were awarded in absentia since they had either left for their homes or to take part in another tournament.

Boys U-16 singles: Gurinder Singh (Pb) bt Navneet Kumar (UP) 6-4, 6-4.

Girls U-14 singles: Likhita Shetty (Kar) bt Eetee Mehta (Guj) 7-5, 6-7 (3) 6-1.

Girls U-16 singles: Eetee Mehta (Guj) bt Ravnoor Kaur (Chd) 6-1, 6-2.

Boys U-14 doubles: Sushant Mohanti and Vilash Khate (NTA) bt Ayush Mintri (Pb)/ Jatinder Singh (Chd) 6-1, 6-0.

Girls U-16 doubles: Ikttesh Chahal (Chd)/Pooja A Narayana (Delhi) bt Bhavika Wadhawan/Ravnoor Kaur (Chd) 6-3, 6-2.
