Mayors should be elected by public: Stuttgart Mayor
Mumbai, Feb 1 (UNI) Stuttgart mayor Dr Wolfgang Schuster today said he personally prefers getting directly elected by the public as it gives him power to take decisions on his own.
''A strong Mayor can work in a much better manner than getting elected by the party councillors,'' said Dr Schuster, who is on a five-day visit to the city on the occasion of the 40th Twinning anniversary between Stuttgart and the city.
Speaking to UNI, Dr Schuster said he personally prefers that the mayors of all cities should get elected by the general public.
Incidentally, the Mumbai mayor is elected by municipal corporators of the party that is in majority in the municipal corporation and, so, has to seek advice from other corporators for major decisions.
Dr Schuster added that he also has the power to take decisions on his own for the development of the city and said he has administrative and defence powers regarding the city.
