Chandigarh, Feb 1 (UNI) The Haryana Government has requested the Centre for a CBI probe into the multi-crore kidney transplant racket whose alleged kingpin Dr Amit Kumar was based in Gurgaon.

The state Home Ministry sources today confirmed here that the state government had dispatched the letter seeking probe by the apex investigation agency into the racket which was believed to be spread over as many as 48 countries.

The sources said that the government had decided to approach the Centre after seeking a detailed report of the much-publicised case from Haryana Police chief Ranjiv Dalal.

The sources stressed that as the racket was spread across many states and nations and the kingpin Dr Amit Kumar was likely to flee the country, a CBI probe into the case had become imperative. The CBI was the appropriate body to request cooperation from International police in the matter, they said.

However, the state police will continue to investigate the matter till the Centre orders the CBI probe into the case. The Gurgaon police has already registered cases against Dr Amit Kumar and other co-accused under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Transplant of Human Organ Act.

Earlier, Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss has given a statement about CBI probe into the case.
