Jaipur, Jan 31 (UNI) AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi today said the Congress can not take a unilateral decision on the issue of reservation for more castes or groups including Gujjars.
Talking to newspersons here today Mr Dwivedi said any decision on such issues could be taken only with consensus among the UPA allies and supporting parties.
He said the Congress could not and would not take any decision on it's own over this issue.
Mr Dwivedi also criticised the Vasundhara Raje government in Rajasthan for sending the Chopra Committee's report to the Centre over the issue of ST status to Gujjars, without its formal opinion and/or recommendation.
The Congress leader said mere forwarding of the committee report was useless.
''The local caste equations differ from state to state and therefore the concerned state government is required to send its opinion or recommendation on the basis of local equations and situation'', he added.
He also refuted the Raje government's charges of the Centre's discrimination towards Rajasthan over the issue of setting up of IIT in the state.
He said the decision of the setting up of the IIT had actually been taken by the UPA government at the Centre and it was the state government which failed to comply with due procedure and formalities.
