Mumbai, Jan 30 (UNI) The fledgling 'Congress Forum', initiated by senior Maharashtra Congress leader Prabhakar Kunte a few days ago, has been asked by the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) to wind up.
MPCC President Prabha Rau said the state unit had informed the central leadership about the parallel forum and had asked it to take note of the development.
''The AICC has informed us that such a parallel forum cannot function and has to wind up. We will inform the concerned accordingly,'' she added.
Ms Rau, making it clear that the Party holds Mr Kunte in high esteem, said, ''The Congress does not consider party leaders and office bearers who attended the first meeting as rebels. All the issues raised by them can be discussed on the party platform. There is no need for a parallel front.'' Ms Rau said that she will be meeting Mr Kunte and other party officebearers, including MPCC Spokesman Anant Gadgil, who participated in the first meeting of the 'Congress Forum'.
Responding to questions, she said the state unit leadership is gearing up to galvanise the party cadre for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls scheduled in 2009.
As part of the exercise, a two-day meeting of the district Congress chiefs has been organised in the city from tomorrow, she informed.
Agenda of the meeting will focus on discussions about the political permutations and combinations in their respective districts after the delimitation of constituencies.
''Political situation at the ground level, and how the local cadre is being trained to handle the changing scenario are some of the issues which will be debated over the next two days,'' Ms Rau informed.
The MPCC is also chalking out programmes for conducting region-wise and district-wise training camps and conclaves of party workers, officebearers and leaders and will be finalised in the days to come.
She said she saw positive prospects for the Party in the state for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. ''Narendra Modi and Mayawati will not be able to make any impact here,'' she claimed.
