Indian wins series against Belgium

By Staff

Chennai, Jan 30 (UNI) India edged out a fighting Belgium 2-1 to win the fourth test and triumph 3-0 in the test series at the Astro Turf stadium here today.

India went into the match in a buoyant mood to wrap up the series, having forced a 2-0 lead winning the second and the third tests in the five-match series. The first Test ended in a 4-4 draw.

They began on the right note, forcing a penalty corner in the very first minute. Then Rajpal Singh on the right flank put them 1-0 ahead, tapping a rebound off the Belgian goal keeper's pad off an Ignace Tirkey cross.

Belgium, who forced a few good moves and a penalty corner, managed to draw level through Jerome Truyens in the 18th minute who tapped in off a goal mouth melee.

After a few counters by both teams, India forced a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute with talented junior drag flicker Diwakar converting the team's second penalty corner.

Belgium wasted five penalty corners in the second half and seven in all. India owed their win to some splendid work by its goal keeper Baljit Singh especially during the penalty corner hits by the rival.

The final Test will be played tomorrow. India could have won by a wider margin but for some miscued hitting in the D. They could earn just two penalty corners throughout the match but their onfield moves were sparkling led by Sardara Singh.
