Punjab: Holy Bein project nearing completion

Hoshiarpur, Jan 30: The ongoing work on cleansing the Holy Bein is in full swing and more than 80 per cent of the work in Kapurthala district had been completed at a cost of Rs 5 crore.

The remaining work in Kapurthala district would be completed before March 31 for which a sum of Rs two crore had been made avaliable, Punjab's Principal Secretary (Labour) and Coordinator of the Bein Project, Mr P Ram said here today.

For completing this prestigious project, land in 16 villages in Hoshiarpur district was being acquired. A survey was being done to bring the water from the river Beas through underground pipes for flowing into the Holy Bein, which is associated with Guru Nanak.

Mr Ram said that steps had been taken to stop the flow of water from drainage systems into the Bein. Special care was being taken to check water flow into the Bein from the drainage systems in the towns of Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, Bhulath, Begowal, Tanda and Dasuya.

He said that special measures were being initiated to use sewage water for irrigation after recharging it in the treatment plants.

A tourism project was being initiated from Terkiana to Sultanpur Lodhi on the banks of the Holy Bein,he added. A hydel project was being set up at village Terkiana which would generate electricity for the adjoining areas.

An annual income of Rs 1.50 crore would be realised from the power generation at Terkiana which would be utilised for the tourism project.
