Bathinda, Jan 29 (UNI) With 17 points Ludhiana emerged the overall champions in the first edition of the three-day Punjab State Panchayat Games for under-16 boys and girls, conducted by the Punjab Sports Department at the Sports Stadium here.
Taran Tarn and Mansa shared the runners-up trophy with 10 points each while hosts Bathinda finished third with nine points.
Ranjit Singh of village Shahdinwala in Ferozpur District became the fastest runner among boys by clocking 12.86 seconds in the 100 metres race.
Ekamjot Kaur of village Kalal (Majra, Ludhiana) sprinted to glory by winning 100 metres in 13.18 seconds and was adjudged the fastest girl athlete.
Punjab Sports Minister Gulzar Singh distributed the prizes. He announced that the Punjab Government would double the strength of sports wing seats in schools and colleges. He also disclosed that Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee had earmarked Rs 2 crore in its budget for sports in the institutions run by it.
Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh announced that the Sports Department would set up new sports wings in the different parts of the state for training of rural youth. The Department will also regularly organise competitions at various levels to promote and encourage sports in the state.
