Coast Guard provides DATs to Pondy fishermen
Puducherry, Jan 29 (UNI) The Indian Coast Guard will be providing four Distress Alert Transmitters (DATs) to fishermen of Puducherry free of cost.
According to an official release here, Chief Minister N Rangasamy would distribute these at a function here tomorrow.
DATs, developed by ISRO's Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad, was a satellite based system designed for use by fishermen venturing into sea. DAT transmitted signals on emergency like fire, boat sinking and medical help on manual activation and the system was floatable and suitable for marine environment.
It operated through DRT Transponder of INSAT-3A and the hub station of the Coast Guard in Chennai would receive the message sent from boats and facilitate rescue operations.
