BJP functionary brutally murdered in TN
Tenkasi, Jan 28 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the town as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary was brutally murdered by an unidentified gang at Alangulam near Tenkasi Town in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu today.
Police sources said Raja Pandi, member of State General Body Council of Tamil Nadu Unit of the BJP, was waylaid by the gang at the Thuthikulam Kalluthu Road at Alangulam while riding a scooter.
The gang chased and attacked him indiscriminately with sickles.
He died on the spot. The gang then escaped from the scene.
Passersby and passengers of a mini-bus were witness to the horrific crime. On information, senior police officials rushed to the spot.
Police said Raja Pandi, celebrating his birthday today, had been engaged in money-lending business in the area. It was not known immediately if the murder was due to business rivalry.
Police have formed a special team to nab the assailants. Pickets have been posted in sensitive areas to handle any untoward incident.
Tenkasi Town had witnessed communal violence in which six people were murdered on August 14, 2007.
