Kabul, Jan 27 : Kandhar Police on Sunday started hunt for the abductors of a US aid worker and her driver with the Taliban saying that it could not "yet" take responsibility for abduction.

"Our goal is to stop the suspected abductors from taking the hostage out of town and hopefully, with God's help, arrest those who have abducted her," The News quoted a police official, as saying.

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Interior Ministry spokesman has said that the police is looking into matter and would secure the American woman release.

"The police are working on the case and we are trying our best to make her release safe," Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said.

The Afghanistan Government has said that no one had contacted the police to claim the kidnapping of Mizell, who works for a small Philippines-headquartered agriculture development organisation.

Gunmen had kidnapped the burqa-clad American woman and her driver while they were driving through a residential area of southern Afghanistan's largest city early on Saturday.

It may be recalled that several people from the Western countries, including two German construction workers and two Italian journalists were kidnapped last year.
