Jammu, Jan 26 (UNI) Peaceful celebrations today marked the 59th Republic Day in the militancy-infested Jammu and Kashmir, with Governor Lt Gen S K Sinha (Retd) hoisting the tri-colour at the M A M Stadium here.

Tight security arrangements were made in and around city to thwart any militant attack.

The ceremony started with the national salute to the first citizen of the state by the marching contingents of army, para-military, NCC, various wings of state police, ex-servicemen and school children.

Despite severe cold conditions, hundreds of children, drawn from various city schools and colleges, presented colourful programmes on the occasion.

Like every year, the function concluded with the 'daredevil' bikers of Jammu and Kashmir Police displaying attractive skills on their motorcycles.

Besides prominent citizens, first lady Ms Premini Sinha, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, wife Ms Shameema Azad and leader of opposition in the state Legislative Assembly Mr A R Rather were also present on the occasion.

The national flags were hoisted by civilians at several places, including road crossings and government institutions, in the city as people recalled the sacrifices made by great freedom fighters.

Peaceful celebrations were also reported from all the district and tehsil headquarters in the region.

With the help of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) units, the day was also celebrated in the remote villages of Doda and Kishtwar districts for the first time after the sprout of militancy in the state, a UNI correspondent from Bhaderwah said.

However, shops of particular community in the major markets of the twin districts remained closed for the day, he said.
