Puri, Jan 26 : Renowned sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik is doing his bit to create awareness about bird flu, using sand as a medium to inform people of the disease.

Patnaik together with his team of students have created a sand sculpture of chickens with the message "Guard against bird flu" on a beach in Puri.

Patnaik said he aimed at spreading awareness about the disease and its preventions.

"People's awareness about bird flu is very limited. Very few people even know what bird flu is. So, we thought people in and around West Bengal should be made aware of what bird flu is and how to prevent it," he said.

Patnaik and his students used seven tonnes of sand for the sculpture, which took them five hours to complete.

Tourists on the beach said it was a good effort on the part of the sand artist.

"I think it is a good idea to make the people aware of this bird flu problem. It's a very serious thing. I think this sand artist doing an awareness thing which is quite a good idea," said Aneveas Philipp, a tourist from Germany.
