Asha Bhosale overwhelmed at Padma Vibhushan honour

Mumbai, Jan 25 (UNI) Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosale today said that she was 'overwhelmed' on being selected for the Padma Vibhushan honour.

Speaking to UNI over telephone from Dubai, where she is performing for her live show, Asha said it was a matter of great joy and happiness. ''But, receiving a Padma Vibhushan when I am celebrating my 75th birthday this September , is very special,''she added.

Winner of National Award for best playback singer in 1981 (Dil Cheez Kya Hai-Umrao Jaan) and 1986 (Mera Kuch Samaan-Ijaazat), the reigning diva of playback singing, Ashatai as she is fondly called, was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for her contribution to Indian cinema in the year 2000.

One of the most versatile playback singers in Bollywood history, Asha has recorded over 10,000 songs for over 800 movies.

She created her own distinctive style in playback singing in the last 60 years.
