Puducherry, Jan 25 (UNI) The Puducherry administration today warned that severe action would be taken against village panchayat presidents if they failed to convene the Grama Sabha meeting tomorrow.
Talking to newspersons here, Local Administration Department Director Vallabhan said action would be initiated under section 202 of the Village and Commune Panchayat Act 1973, against the village panchayat presidents if they failed to convene the grama sabha and get the approval for village panchayat budget.
All the village panchayat presidents should convene grama sabha and submit the budget of each panchayat for the current year and the proposed budget for next year, he said.
Stating that non-convening of the grama sabha was against the constitution, the Director said even if village panchayat presidents boycott the meeting, it would be held either with the vice-presidents or executive officers.
He said 98 observers were appointed by the department for the 98 village panchayats meeting tomorrow..
While several demands of the panchayat presidents were implemented, a committee on the issue of devolution of powers which was constituted had submitted its report to the cabinet. The government would have to take steps on it now, he added.
