Phagwara, Jan 24 (UNI) National Commission for Safai Karamcharis chairperson Santosh Chaudhry today sought a detailed report from Punjab government officials on the news reports about attempt to suicide by a Safai Karamchari working earlier as contract worker due to mal-practices of the local bodies in Pathankot.
She also demanded that the state government must streamline hiring system of safai karamcharis in the Muncipal Committees and other urban local bodies to ensure the stoppage of such exploitations Ms Chaudhry, while talking to mediapersons here, said she had sought detailed report on the issue from Punjab Chief Secretary Ramesh Inder Singh, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Darbara Singh Guru, Principal Secretary Local Bodies Department D.S.Bains, and Deputy Commissioner Gurdaspur.
She stressed that the Commission was continuously asking local bodies to abolish the contract system for hiring the services of the safai kramcharis because it led to their exploitation.
She alleged that Safai Karamcharis were not even being paid minimum wages and their services were being terminated on flimsy grounds and demanded that the state government must immediately bring an end to the practises that lead to the exploitations of safai karamcharis.
