New Delhi, Jan 24 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said the Delhi Jal Board would ensure equitable drinking water distribution and adequate availability of water in the capital before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

She was speaking to reporters after laying the foundation stone of a 14.1 million litre capacity Underground Reservoir and Booster Pumping Station at Sarai Kale Khan, among the 53 UGRs to be commissioned by the end of 2009 to meet the water scarcity in the city.

The Chief Minister said the Sarai Kale Khan UGR is one of those 28 UGRs which would be fed by treated supply for Sonia Vihar Plant which is presently more or less functional upto its full capacity.

Speaking at the function, where area MLA Tajdar Babbar, former Mayor Farhad Suri and DJB CEO Arun Mathur were present, Ms Dikshit described this an important project which once completed would overcome scarcity of drinking water in a number of colonies under Jangpura and Minto Road Assembly segments apart from enhancement of pressure of supply even at tail end.

The UGR, at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crores, would become functional by March 2009. It is being constructed by M/s Larsen and Turbo.
