Colombo, Jan 23 (UNI) Supersonic fighter jets of the Sri Lankan Air Force bombed ''a strategically important LTTE base this morning during low diving missions'' in the east of Iranamadu tank at Kalamadukulam in the rebel-held Kilinochchi district, defence sources here claimed.
According to Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Andi Wijesoriya, the air sorties were carried out with ''pinpoint accuracy on information obtained through real-time air surveillance and ground reconnaissance.'' ''The target identified as X-Ray base was located in a thick jungle patch in LTTE's claimed 'high military zone','' the Defence Ministry said, adding that the intelligence report say it was the hub of LTTE activities in Kilinochchi.
''The sources also revealed that it has been a regular visiting site of a high-profile LTTE terrorist,'' the Ministry said.
There was no immediate reaction from the LTTE in this regard.
In a separate incident in the government-held Vavuniya area, government troops gunned down ''an LTTE suicide bomber who attempted to attack an Army picket deployed at Nelukkalma in Vavuniya'' this morning.
''Troops have found a belt-bomb worn by suicide bombers and a micro pistol in the possession of the slain terrorist,'' the Ministry said, adding that a search operation was being conducted in the area.
