Sporting looking for win against Salgaocar

By Staff

Margao, Jan 23 (UNI) Placed seventh in the league table, Sporting Club de Goa would seek to garner full points when they take on bottom-placed Salgaocar Sports Club in their 13th round ONGC I League football championship match to be played at the Nehru Stadium Fatorda here tomorrow.

Though both teams had played a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Sporting has an edge since they have registered three wins and three draws out of 12 outings and have 12 points. Salgaocar have not tasted a single win so far and are at the bottom with only five points from five drawn matches.

Sporting have a well-balanced forward line, spearheaded by Elijah Junior who has four goals in his name, and Adjei Lawrence with two goals to his credit.

Sporting's defence looks shaky as they have conceded 18 goals and have only 8 goals in their name.

If Sporting has any hopes of snatching full points, their midfield must combine well and the strikers must find the target.

Salgaocar are far from impressive and are almost on way to relegation. If they want to make a fight out of tomorrow's match, their midfielders have to put up a superlative performance. They will depend on their forward Felix Chimawkau, who has six goals to his credit including a hat-trick, Boniface Ambani, Rocus Lamari and Milagres Gonsalves.

Sporting technical director Peter Valles said, ''Every match is important for us and our main aim is to win. We will not underestimate Salgaocar. Although Salgaocar has not registered a single win, it is a good team and in the last match against Churchill, they fought gallantly but lost by 1-2 over a penalty goal during the injury time.'' Sporting midfielder Joseph Pereria and defender Samanand Singh, who are nursing injuries, will not play tomorrow.
