Wijk Aan Zee (Netherlands) Jan 23: World champion Viswanathan Anand drew quickly in just 25 moves from a Cataland Opening to move into tied third place in the elite Group A at the 70th Corus Grandmasters chess tournament.

The Indian, who is now on five points, shares the third spot with Vladimir Kramnik, half a point behind leaders Magnus Carlsen and Lev Aronian. Carlsen lost his ninth round game after being shocked by Peter Leko while Levon Aronian drew with Pavel Eljanov. Anand and Gelfand repeated their game from the Mexico world championship. The Israeli GM tried to improve with 11.Re1 but the world champion, playing with black in a Catalan Opening, forced him to hold the balance.

In group B, Pentala Harikrishna and Koneru Humpy played a 28-move draw against each other. While Hairkrishna is tied for fourth place, Humpy is tenth.

Hari now has five points while Humpy has four.

In Group C, Parimarjan Negi was held to a draw by Mark van der Werf. Negi, who had a phenomenal rise after beginning with two losses, is tied for third place.
