Kendrapada, Jan 21 (UNI) Irate villagers attacked an Assistant Sub Inspector(ASI) and a constable of Mahila police station when they tried to arrest a newly married couple at Dalipala village in Jagatsinghpur district, police said today.

ASI Puspanjali Jena and a constable of Bhubanewswar Mahila police station had gone to the village yesterday to rescue one Manashi Das, who was married to a youth of the village following an FIR lodged by her father.

The father alleged that his daughter was abducted by one Saroj Barik of Dahipala village.

As the police team led by the ASI raided the house and forcibly tried to bring the couple out of the house, the villagers gathered at the spot and resisted the police action.

This led to a scuffle in which the lady police officer and the constable sustained head injuries. The irate mob also damaged the police vehicle. The police team returned empty handed.
