Panaji, Jan 21 (UNI) Reigning champions Petroleum Sports Promotional Board (PSPB) men and women teams today sailed into semi-finals of the SAG's 63rd Inter-state Inter-zonal Badminton championship, which got underway at Indoor Complex, Campal here today.
Besides PSPB, other teams to enter the semi-finals of the men's event for Rahimatoola Cup were Maharashtra, Air India and Karnataka, while in the women's event, other teams to reach semis were Assam, Railways and Kerala for Chadah Cup.
In the men's quarter finals, PSPB edged out BSNL 3-2, Maharastra beat Assam 3-2, Air India defeated Uttar Pradesh 3-1 and Karnataka beat Punjab 3-2.
In the women's quarter finals, PSPB beat West Bengal 2-1, Assam beat Gujarat 2-1 and Railways drub Delhi 2-1. Kerala gained a walk over as LIC did not turn up.
In the first singles between PSPB and BSNL tie, Petroleum's Anup Sridhar beat K Tanishaq of BSNL 21-18, 21-18, in the second singles P Kashyap defeated K Anil Kumar 21-11, 21-16 and in the doubles, PSCB's Rupesh Kumar partnering with Arvind Bhat beat BSNL's Abhjit Dutta&Sudip Bhattacharya 21-13, 21-15.
In the PSPB and West Bengal women's quarter finals, Saina Nehwal of PSPB made short work of Sheshdari Sanyal 21-8, 21-3 in the first singles and in the doubles, Jwala Gutta pairing with Shruti Kurien beat Barnali Raha&Amrita Mukherejee 21-5, 21-14.
Other quarter-final results (Men's singles): Maharastra beat Assam 3-2 Ajay Jayaram bt Anshuman Hazrika 21-5, 21-12, Sagar Chopda bt Rajeeb Goswami 21-8, 22-20.
(Doubles) Mangirish Palekar&Mayur Ghatnekar bt Bhahiman Bora&Dibyajyoti Bora 20-22, 21-15, 21-8.
Air India beat Uttar Pradesh 3-1. (Singles) Anand Pawar lost to Ravindra Singh 12-21, 21-9,18-21. Utsav Mishra beat Anurag Sharma 21-13, 21-10.
(Doubles) Jishnu Sanyal&Akshay Dewalkar beat Ravindra Singh&Anurag Sharma 21-17, 21-10, Jishnu Sanyal lost to Prashant Kumar 21-7, 21-11.
Karnatka beat Punjab 3-2. (Singles) Ajith Wijetilak bt Mayank Behal 21-18, 22-20, V Amar bt Lakhwinder Singh 21-17, 21-9.
