Parikrama open to different genres of music

Mumbai, Jan 20 (UNI) Parikrama, India's most well known band, is not yet ready to trade their trademark classic rock sound for a potentially more lucrative Bollywood sound.

''We will only work on a Bollywood soudtrack if the story and concept suits our music,'' said Nitin Malik, vocalist of the band.

Though not so motivated to switch to Bollywood kind of music the way a number of rock musicians have done, the band claims to be open to different genres of music including Bollywood.

On the question of why music from India, be it Bollywood or from other genre, is unable to crack the international market, Malik blames the lack of marketing and presentation skills of the artists and the industry as a whole. But, the Internet and information explosion has helped unknown talented artists to find their niche, he said.

''The fact that lot of Bollywood tracks are remixed across the world is a testimony to the fact that 99 per cent of the time, the basic tune or harmony is cool,'' he explained.

He cited an example of Raj Kapoor's film 'Mera Naam Joker', which was a big hit in the (then) USSR, as a 'good' Bollywood music cutting across cultures and tastes.

Giving another example of renowned musician A R Rehman, he said Rehman was also roped in to do the music for stage version of 'The Lord of the Rings'.

Agreeing that Bollywood dominates the Indian pop music landscape and with issues like piracy, copyright infringements and unproffessional attitudes not making things easier for the small rock music market, he said the band however has no intention of cooling their amps or changing their sound, nor are they unduly worried about the new genre of music that is cropping up.

''The more the merrier, with the listener having more variety to choose from...a lot of the new international bands are anyway coming out with songs with a classic rock feel but with a contemporary flavour,'' stated Malik.

''A lot of the old bands too have rejoined to undertake successful tours. Take Van Halen for example, we all thought (singer) David Lee Roth was history, now they are enjoying a successful reunion tour after 20 years,'' he said.

Talking about his band, he said Parikrama is in fact planning to release their debut album on the net for free.

''We want our music to be accessible to our fans because our fans have been demanding it for years,'' said guitarist Sonam.

Formed at Kirori Mal College (KMC) in 1991, the band from Delhi has been in the rock music business for almost 20 years. It has staged hundreds of shows across the country and abroad and has thousands of fans.

The band is currently in the city and will perform with Saif Ali Khan at the Andheri Sports Complex today. It will also play at MMRDA grounds in suburban Bandra on February 1, when the legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden open their world tour 'Somewhere Back In Time' here.
