Kathmandu, Jan 19: Maoists party chairman Prachanda has said the country might witness major political assassinations in the coming months, media reports said here today.
''A series of murders and counter-murders could take place in the coming months. Attempts to sabotage the election are likely,'' Kantipur quoted Prachand as saying. ''In the coming days, there could be assassinations of important political figures like the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan,'' he said.
''I have received such information from several sources.
Several groups have entered the capital for the purpose,'' he stated.
Prachanda added that the explosion at Bhotahity on January 14 'which took place only 70 meters from the vehicle I was in' is indicative of what might unfold in the coming days.
''Prachanda said that even if such assassinations take place, the April 10 elections will not be scuttled, and the aim of the perpetrators will not be fulfilled,'' he said.
He said it would instead expedite the end of feudalism.
''The election must take place, is going to take place and will take place,'' he said, underlining that the people of Nepal understand the importance of the election only too well to be influenced by those attempting to sabotage it.
''I don't believe that this great political process will fail,'' he said.
Prachanda said he would contest the election from Rolpa and Kathmandu. Rolpa, a district in mid western Nepal, is the Maoists origin place.
But Prachanda did not say who would plot the murder. But stated that the forces which do not like election will try to create trouble clearly referring to the monarchy.
All the major political parties have said that they would go for democratic republic system in the upcoming Constituent Assembly election to be held on April 10.
