Kahalgaon, Jan 19 (UNI) At least one person was killed in police firing today, while three others, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), were seriously injured in mob violence in this sub-divisional town of Bhagalpur district in south Bihar.

Superintendent of Police (SP) G S Gangwar told UNI that police opened fire after being attacked by a violent mob, killing one Mohammad Aslam on the spot.

The mob was protesting against the killing of two people in the town yesterday and had called a Kahalgaon bandh today.

The police first resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd, which was pelting stones, failing which they had to open fire, the SP said.

Three people, including DSP B N Jha, were seriously injured in the mob violence and lathicharge and were admitted at a local hospital.

Later, another mob assembled near the hospital and ransacked the hospital building, besides setting an ambulance and a police jeep afire, both of which were completely gutted.

As a result, additional police forces were rushed from the district headquarters Bhagalpur and were deployed in the affected areas of the township here, the SP said.

He maintained that the situation had since been brought under control, though tension prevailed in several areas.

At least two persons were killed and as many as 18 others, including 12 policemen, injured in mob violence and subsequent police firing in the town yesterday when a mob of about 200 people, protesting against the long daily power cuts, turned violent and attacked the police forces.
