Nepal refutes reports that Koirala manufactured fake Indian currency

Kathmandu, Jan 19 : Nepal Government has refuted media reports that Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was involved in manufacturing counterfeit Indian currency notes when he was in political exile in India in the early 1970s.

The report titled "Three decades later, Koirala reveals: I manufactured fake Indian currency," had appeared in Indian Express, on January 17. The report said that the startling disclosure has been made by Koirala himself in an interview to Nepal based Kantipur TV channel.

The Office of Prime Minister Koirala and his Council of the Ministers have stated that they are "deeply saddened by such false news" and "rebuts" them.

"The office requests to one and all not to be misled by the false comments being circulated as claimed sourced from 'Afno Itihas Afnai Britanta', the autobiographical conversation of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, broadcast by Kantipur Television and published in the Nepal weekly magazine," Nepal government said in a statement.

An official said that the refutation statement has also been mailed to the editor of Indian Express.

Nepal weekly, a sister publication of the Kantipur Publications, has already published a refutation in this week's issue.

The Nepal Government has also requested all concerned "not to be misled by such false matters".
