Junior engineer assaulted

Puri, Jan 19 (UNI) A junior engineer of the Rural Works department was brutally assaulted by a contractor in the office as he refused to pass fake work bills.

According to a report, lodged with the Town police station by Assistant Executive Engineer Jogendra Acharya, one Pramod Kumar Acharya, a contractor, accompanied by another Sibaprasad Mohanty, forced entry into his office and assaulted junior engineer Jagabandhu Mishra.

The contractor, he said, forced Mr Mishra to pass the bills and when the Junior Engineer denied to pass the bills on the ground those were fake, the contractor took out an iron rod from his sleeve and hit Mishra on the head.

Mr Mishra fell down unconscious. He was rushed to the district headquarters hospital and later admitted to the S C B medical college and hospital in a critical condition.

The office staffs staged a demonstration as soon as police arrived in the office but by then the culprits had managed to flee from the scene.

The Town police had registered a criminal case against the contractor.
