Eye surgeon fined, asked to pay compensation

Jabalpur, Jan 19: A local consumer court has fined eye surgeon Dr R K Khare of Jabalpur Medical College for negligently performing a cataract operation and directed him to pay Rs one lakh as compensation to the patient.

The District Consumer Forum directed that the compensation as also Rs 1,000 towards litigation fee be paid within two months and to pay six per cent interest for any delay.

In his petition, complainant Kripa Shankar Tiwari said he was operated upon for cataract at Dr Khare's private clinic on January 2, 2005 without checking his blood sugar. Due to the doctor's negligence, infection developed in his eye threatening loss of eye sight. Subsequent examination showed that he was having high blood sugar.

On the direction of local eye specialist Dr Pawan Sthapak, who was consulted on January 17, the patient was referred to Chennai's Shankar Netralaya, where loss of eye sight was prevented through surgery.

The patient sought Rs 1.50 lakh towards medical expenses and another Rs 55,000 for the mental agony caused due to negligent treatment.
