5,000 workers rendered unemployed following closure of jute mill
Hooghly, Jan 19 (UNI) At least 5,000 workers were rendered unemployed today when the management of the Dalhousie Jute Mill, under Bhadreshwar police station of this district, issued a ''suspension of work'' notice for an indefinite period of time.
The mill's management said the workers had organised an agitation yesterday to demand hike in wages and the management was compelled to close down the mill fearing unrest among the workers.
Meanwhile, Chandannagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kalyan Mukherjee said a police contingent had been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure and the situation was under control.
