Chennai, Jan 17: Floral tributes were paid to AIADMK founder and Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran, popularly called as 'MGR,' on his 91st birth anniversary today.
MGR's political successor and party supremo J Jayalalithaa paid tributes by garlanding the statue of her mentor at the party headquarters in the presence of hundreds of party workers.
After inaugurating a free medical camp and releasing the birthday souvenir to mark the occasion, she drove down to Ramavaram Gardens, the residence of the AIADMK founder, and paid tribues at the memorials of MGR's mother Sathyabhama, MGR and his wife Janaki.
She hoisted the party flag at the entrance of MGR's residence, unveiled a plaque and distributed prizes to children of the 'Dr MGR School for Speech and Hearing Impaired,' being run on the premises as per the late leader's will.
She also garlanded the statue of MGR in the Ramavaram Gardens, which was given a facelift in view of Ms Jayalalithaa's visit.
This was Ms Jayalaithaa's first visit to the Gardens in 20 years.
She had last visited it on December 24, 1987, when MGR breathed his last.
On behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, State Ministers M K Stalin, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi and Ms Poongothai Aladi Aruna paid rich tributes to the late leader by garlanding the MGR's statue at the Dr MGR University premises.
Union Minister S Reghupathy and Chennai Mayor M Subramaniam also paid floral tributes to a decorated portrait of the late leader in the university premises.
