Mumbai, Jan 17 (UNI) One of the greatest middle distance runner Gabriela Szabo of Romania today said the Mumbai Marathon has been great for the Indians as it has helped to change their perspective about the sport in a positive way.

Szabo, one of the brand ambassadors of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2008, speaking at a meet and greet session with the media here today said that she is extremely happy to see that the number of participants in the marathon are increasing year by year and it is a good change that people are taking to running in India.

Speaking about herself, she said now a days as the Vice President of the Romania Athletic Federation she tries to promote running in schools in the country.

''I try and explain to children or any person I come across, how nice athletics and running is and each and every person should take up running at least as a hobby,'' She said.

Speaking about the marathon, she said that she used to train with marathon runners, and it is a thankless job. The amount the marathon runner pushes himself or herself is tremendous.

The real test for the marathoner starts from the 30 km mark upto the 42 km finish line as this is when your body is tiring and you have to push yourself harder and harder. The person who is able to do that is usually the winner, she added.

Szabo also came down on doping in sports and said that the Marion Jones case can be used as an example to make everybody see the need to stay clean.

''This is a responsibility for each and every athlete to see that the sport stays clean and away from such wrong doings,'' she added.
