Kochi, Jan 17: This historic port city is all set to take its place among select ports of the world holding the distinction of being stopovers for the prestigious Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) 2008-09.
Regarded as the world's premier yacht race, the VOR is considered to be one of the most demanding team sporting events.
The race, scheduled to start in Alicante, Spain, in October this year will cover a total of 39,325 nautical miles and touch 12 ports, including Kochi, before finishing nine months later in July 2009 at St. Petersburg, Russia.
The Kochi Stopover Port Agreement will be signed here tomorrow by Mr. Andy Hindley, Race Director, Volvo Ocean Race, Mr. N Ramachandran, Chairman, Cochin Port Trust and Mr. K G Mohanlal, Managing Director, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation.
State Tourism and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Mr. Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Cars India and Mr. Eric Leblanc, Managing Director, Volvo India Pvt. Ltd., will also be present on the occasion.
