Melbourne, Jan 17: India's Sania Mirza has advanced into the third round of the women's singles event in the Australian Open after defeating unseeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Sania won the first set convincingly 6-1 with her forehand proving to be too powerful for her unseeded Swiss oponent. But Sania lost momentum in the second set as Bacsinszky won the second set 4-6. A determined Sania broke Bacsinszky's serve at a crucial time and won the set 7-5.
In the next round, Sania has the uphill task of taking on eighth-seeded Venus Williams of the USA. The American defeated Camille Pin of France 7-5 6-4 to book a berth in the third round.
