Tiruchirapalli, Jan 17: The Tamil Nadu Government Village Health Nurses Association today opposed the State Government's reported move to recruit freshers in Health Sub Centres to fill Village Health Nurses (VHN) vacancies.
In a statement here, Association President P Nirmala said the move would spoil the government's objectives in rural health policy.
She said more than 10,000 VHNs, the mainstay of the state's rural health sector, were unhappy over the decision.
The scrapping of the certificate courses in Village Health Nursing had paved way for the 'recruitment' of freshers, who complete Diploma courses in general nursing in Sub Health Centres, before being absorbed in Government hospitals.
Ms Nirmala, named the 'Hero of the Planet- 2000' by the acclaimed 'Times' magazine for her 'meritorious services in rural health,' said the freshers with no rural experience, would expose the poor villagers to health risks.
