Imphal, Jan 16: Migratory birds have begun arriving at the Loktak lake in Manipur's Bishenpur district.
''Every year a large number of migratory birds come to Manipur,'' Forest officials here said and added that for research purpose details are tied to the legs of these birds so that their movement can be traced.
''The movement of birds is mysterious and it is not known how they come to the same spot every year from Europe and other parts of the world,'' officials said while explaining the reason behind the the tagging of birds.
Last year, the state government had taken special measures in view of reports of spread of bird flu. The Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, Wild Life Wing of Forest and Environment Department and Loktak Development Authority have started counting the migratory birds.
Officials said the lake had been declared endangered due to pollution and construction of dam for power generation. The natural flow of water had also been stopped. Due to these changes in the environment, the number of migratory birds, which come to the lake every year, has decreased.
