Kolkata, Jan 16 (UNI) The East Bengal Working Committee today appointed Manoranjan Bhattacharya as the new coach to lift the team from the relegation zone in the I-League.
The meeting began at 1730 hours and continued for over two hours before the formal announcement was made. '' Manoranjan Bhattacharya has been appointed coach for the rest of the I-League. We have six home games to turn our fortunes, '' EB honourary Secretary Kalyan Majumdar said.
''Subrata Bhattacharya was mentally and physically drained after the team's poor performance. He wished to discontinue, as he could not cope with the pressure. We decided to release him,'' Majumdar said.
Manoranjan had earlier said, ''Yes, I have been approached by the top officials. They came over to my house last evening for discussions. Now that the team is struggling, I want to help the club resurrect its position.'' Mr Bhattacharya had been the coach of the red-gold earlier and took them to their first NFL title in 2000-01.
Meanwhile, Subrata Bhattacharya, who submitted his resignation for the second time in 14 days today at noon, told UNI, ''I believe that the coach is as good as his team. If my team has failed, I have failed.'' ''There must be some reason why the performance of the team dipped so sharply since the Fed Cup success. I feel I should take the moral responsibility,'' he said.
