Karur, Jan 16 (UNI) The Integrated Textile Park, sanctioned by the Union Textiles Ministry, at Manalmedu Thalapatti village on the Karur-Dindigul National Highway, near here, is expected to be commissioned by March 2009.
Official sources told UNI that construction work for the park, one among the 30 sanctioned across the country including six in Tamil Nadu, was progressing in full swing. Building a perimeter wall at an outlay of Rs 1.2 crore, laying roads and constructing culverts and storm water drainage at a cost of Rs 8.98 crore have been initiated.
They said it was proposed to install 400 looms, facilities for gradation and packing, addressing the needs of export activities, at an area of 110 acres.
While the Union Government had allocated Rs 40 crore, the State Government had provided Rs five crore for creating basic infrastructure like constructing buildings for banks, testing laboratories, training centre, exhibition halls, restaurant and fire and rescue service units. Besides, the stakeholders/export units functioning in and around Karur would invest Rs 225 crore on machinery and equipment, they said.
On completion, the park was likely to provide direct employment to more than 3,000 people and indirectly help 40,000 people.
Export activities in this town would get a fillip once the park started commercial activities. It was projected that Karur, exporting textile products like bed spreads, curtain clothes and towels, valued at Rs 600 crore, would touch the Rs 10,000 crore mark by 2010.
