New Delhi, Jan 16 (UNI) The family and friends of Anand Jon have sought meetings with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other senior Indian government officials to enlist their help in getting the celebrity fashion designer released on bail from a US prison.
The family members and friends want the Government of India to step in and intervene so that Anand Jon Alexander ''gets a chance to defend himself from baseless'' rape charges.
They have also pleaded the government to engage an attorney who can look into the ''human rights violations'' on the Indians living abroad, particularly in the case of Anand Jon.
Anand Jon's mother Shashi Abraham and sister Sanjana Jon, who have been camping in the national capital for the past few days now, along with several of his friends are meeting Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday to present their side of the story.
The acclaimed fashion designer, recently profiled by Newsweek, was arrested in Los Angeles on March 6, 2006 on the charges of alleged sexual assaults on some of the aspiring models.
The family members alleged that Anand Jon was languishing in the US prison for the past several months in ''inhuman'' conditions and not been given any chance to defend himself.
''The Indian government should appoint an attorney and give a guarantee to the US authorities stating that Anand Jon would not flee that country if released on bail. He would stand trial and defend himself,'' they said.
The family members and the friends of Anand Jon would hold a candlelight vigil at Gateway of India in Mumbai on Tuesday to seek a ''fair trial'' for the incarcerated Indian designer in the US.
