Pune, Jan 15 (UNI) The 13th Federation Cup National Cross Country Championship will be hosted in Nagpur on February 2 and 3.
The event assumes importance as it would serve to select the India teams to take part in the World Cross Country Championship to be held in the United Kingdom on March 23.
Maharashtra Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) secretary general Pralhad Sawant told reporters here today that a strong 36-member Maharashtra squad has been selected to take part in the national cross country meet. The final selection, however, will be held in Nagpur on January 27.
Mr Sawant said the Federation Cup National Cross Country Championship, allotted to Nagpur for the first time, will be competed under the following categories: Men (12 and 4 kms), women (8 and 4 kms), boys under-20 (8 kms), and girls under-20 (6 kms).
Besides, in view of the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, the Athletic Federation of India (AFI) has decided to include boys and girls under-18 and under-16 categories also, Mr Sawant added. The boys under-18 will compete in a 6-km race, while the girls will have a 4-km race. The under-16 boys and girls will have 3-km races.
The MAAA will be selecting promising under-18 and under-16 boys and girls from the Federation Cup event and they will be trained under expert coaches -- Bhau Kane (Nagpur), Pandurang Mhaskar (Kolhapur), Bhagyashri Bile (Pune), U L Saini (Pune) and Anna Kane (Nagpur) till October 2008 at Nagpur itself, Mr Sawant said.
The MAAA has constituted selection panels to select the men and women athletes for the national cross country meet. The men's selection panel is headed by former Olympian Balkrishna Akotkar and comprises Kailash Mane (Satara), Sharad Suryawanshi (Nagpur) and Atul Patil (Amravati). The women's selection committee is chaired Charulata Naigaonkar (Nagpur) and includes Bhagyashri Bile (Pune), Vidya Deoghare (Nagpur) and L Leelamma (Mumbai).
The 36-member provisional Maharashtra squad for the national meet is as follows: Men (12 kms): Parshuram Bhoi (Kol), Praveen Kumar (Pune), Deepak Kumar (Pune), Maruti Dolas ( Mum-city), Ramesh Pal (Pune), Lingappa Sargar (Mum-City).
Men (4 kms): Ashok Kumbhare (Mum-city), Mohammed Younus (Pune), Naresh Kumar (Pune), Pranjal Gogoi (Pune), Sachin Patil (Mum-City), Shatrughuna Dhruv (Mum-City).
Women (8 kms): Vijaymala Patil (Sangli), Neelam Kadam (Raigad), Anuja Bijagare (Nag), Nikita Nagpure (A'Nagar), Nisha Wankhede (Nag), Bhagyashri Khanekar (Pune).
Women (4 kms): Jyoti Gavte (Parbhani), Anupama Patil (Mum-City), Dimple Naidu (Nag), Amruta Mane (Pune), Mangal Pardi (Sangli), Sushma Bele (Nag).
Boys Under-20 (8 kms): Bhau Lambar (Sindhudurg), Anil Pawar (Pune), Prashant Surve (Satara), Avdesh Kumar (Pune), Ranjit C K (Pune), Balu Nimbekar (Nashik).
