54690 job cards distributed in Kupwara, once hub of militants

Srinagar, Jan 15: Under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Rs 4.10 crore have been expended and 54,690 job cards besides 650 rural works taken up in 11 community blocks of Kupwara district, once a hub of militants in north Kashmir.

An official spokesman said that as a result of implementation of the scheme since 2006, Rs 6.18 crore were made available.

He said out of sanctioned amount Rs 4.10 crore had been utilised and 2.64 lakh mandays generated so far during current fiscal.

The concerned officers were asked to submit their plan proposals up to Rs 1 crore for 2008-09 immediately.

Kupwara, the most militancy-affected district in Jammu and Kashmir, was the first where NREGS was sanctioned.
