New Delhi, Jan 14 (UNI) Two teenagers, who inspired by TV crime shows, attempted to extort money from a jeweller by pretending to be members of a notorious gang but were arrested when they showed up to collect the money.

Saurabh Sharma (18) and Bunty Mehra (19) used to call up Uttam Nagar-based jeweller Chaturbhuj Garg from various PCOs as well as their own mobile phones and threaten him to pay up five lakh rupees. They threatened him that if he did not comply, his children would be abducted or he would be attacked.

Garg did not initially pay heed to the calls and only approached the police when on Saturday, the duo rang him from their own mobile and asked him to keep the amount at a designated place. A trap was laid at the place and the two apprehended when they took up the bag, supposedly containing the extortion amount.

The two, on interrogation, confessed that they had been inspired by crime stories on various news channels, and hit on this way to obtain some money to set up their own business, as the economic condition of their families was not good.

They had obtained the number of the jeweller from the signboard of his shop.
