Farmer commits suicide in Nashik district

Vitthal Dhondiram Athre had set himself afire due to alleged frustration over crop failure and indebtedness. He had taken a total loan of Rs 1.57 lakh from the Vividh Kanyakari Society and others, according to the police.

Athre was unable to repay the loan because of the repeated failure of his crops. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital on January 11 after he burnt himself. Later, Athre was shifted to the Nashik district civil hospital. He succumbed to his burn injuries last night, the police said. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena today organised a ''morcha'' to condemn circumstances that forced the farmer to commit suicide.
