Churchill punctures Mahindra 4-2, Odafe excels with 4 goals

By Staff

Margao, Jan 14 (UNI) Nigerian Odafe Okolie's four goals, including a hat-trick, helped Churchill Brothers trounce Mahindra United 4-2 and gain full points in their 11th round ONGC I league Championship match at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda today.

Okolie's goals came in the 1st, 62nd, 65th and 88th minutes for Churchill Brothers, while Andrew Pomeye's goal in the 52nd minute and Stevan Dias in the 64th minute scored for Mahindra United.

Odafe was later adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.

With this win, Churchill increased their points tally to 20 from 11 outings, while Mahindra had 14 points from an equal number of outings.

Churchill got off to an aggressive start and drew first blood as early as in the very first minute through Nigerian striker Odafe Okolie off a well measured pass received from Mboyo Iyomi.

The home team had another chance to increase their lead in the 4th minute after Odafe collected a pass from Mboyo, unleashed a rasping shot which crushed into the right goal post and rebounded into the play.

After this, Mahindra took over and came near scoring with a couple of good moves, but Churchill goalkeeper Vinay Singh thwarted both their moves. In the 16th minute, Sushil Kumar after receiving a good pass from Andrew Pomeye had only to beat the rival goalkeeper Singh, who made a smart save.

The jeepmen were further frustrated five minutes before the breather when Churchill Goalkeeper Vinay Singh again fisted over a powerpacked shot by Stevan Dias.

In a fast paced second half, Mahindra restored parity in the 52nd minute through Andrew Pomeye off a pass from Pieere Douhu to make it 1-1.

Churchill brothers increased their lead in the 62nd minute through Odafe Okolie following a flag kick by Kheitang Paite to make it 2-1. However, the lead was short lived as Mahindra leveled the score in the 64th minute through Stevan Dias off a cross pass from Pomeye 2-2.

In the counter attack, Churchill increased their lead in the 65th minute through Odafe following a goal mouth melee to make it 3-2.

In the 70th minute Churchill could have further increased their lead when Mboyo after collecting a pass dodged past couple of rival defenders and unleashed a shot which sailed over the bar.

Churchill brothers sealed the fate of Mahindra with Odafe's 4th goal whose 25 yarder shot found the net off a pass from D Raju to make it 4-2.
