25 held for burning banned substances in city
Chennai, Jan 14 (UNI) As many as 25 people, who allegedly burned tyre and plastic materials in and around North Chennai, were arrested here today.
Police said in the wake of the High Court order to initiate stern action against the offenders, police teams went on rounds in several areas such as Flower Bazaar, Tiruvottriyur and Washermenpet and found some people burning tyres.
The fire was immediately put out and the violators arrested. They were, however, released on bail.
It is customary for the Tamils to celebrate Bhogi, the day before Pongal, by burning discarded things.
Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had warned of the increasing pollution levels due to burning of tyre and plastics.
