Margao, Jan 13 (UNI) Riding on a fine hat-trick by mercurial Nigerian forward Ranty Martins, defending champions Dempo scored an emphatic 4-1 win over Sporting Club de Goa and maintained their unbeaten record in their 11th round ONGC I League championship match played at the Nehru Stadium Fatorda here today.
Ranty Martins in the 15th, 41st and 89th minutes, and Edeh Chidi in the 22nd minute scored for the winners. Substitute Fraddy Mascarenhas reduced the margin for Sporting in the 63rd minute.
With this win, Dempo collected 27 points from 11 outings with eight wins and three draws to top the table. Sporting Club de Goa remained on the same 12 points from an equal number of outings.
In a one-sided affair, Dempo started in a whirlwind fashion dominatating the proceeding throughout and shot into the lead as early as in the 15th minute of the first half through Ranty Martins who, after grabbing the ball from rival defender Chinta handrashekar, unleashed a rasping 25-yarder which found the net to make it 1-0.
After some persistent raids, Dempo once again tasted success in the 22nd minute through Edeh Chidi whose header off a free kick pass from Valerian Rebello made it 2-0.
Dempo further consolidated their lead in the 41st minute through Ranty Martins (his brace). It was a cross pass from Edeh Chidi to Climax Lawrence, who failed to reach the ball. But, following him was Renty who took an opportunity and just tapped the ball into the net. At half time, Dempo were leading 3-0.
After the change over, Sporting played with renewed vigour, accelarating the pace of the game, and reduced the margin in the 63rd minute through substitute Fraddy Mascarenhas who came in place of Joseph Pereira.
Fraddy, after collecting the ball, dodged past rival defender Sameer Naik and unleashed a full-blooded right-footer which hit the cross bar and went into the net to make it 3-1. Soon after, Sporting had another chance to reduce the margin. But, this time, Micky Fernandes' power-packed shot hit the left post and went wide.
Dempo could have further increased their lead in the 80th minute but Ranty Martins and Edeh Chidi's attempted tries were brilliantly saved by rival goalkeeper Luis Barreto.
A minute before the long whistle, Ranty scored his third goal off a cross pass received from Sameer Naik to make it 4-1.
Later, Ranty was adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.
